Scrimshaw !

The tools you need for scrimshaw is : a pencil , needle and a pinwise to attach the needle , color (artist oil color or ink) , magnifying glasses , good lighting , a cloth or soft paper and a sharpening stone (or diamond sharpener ) .

This is the knife that Viveca will place her artwork on .

The surface of the material that is going to be scrimmed ( in this case , mammuth ivory ) , has to be mirror polished .

Make a brief drawing of the choosen motif with the pencil .

Viveca start her scrimshaw with the eyes on the motif . ( But you can also start by doing the contours .) She is doing the dot-type of scrimshaw , wich means a lot of small dots . This means a lot of work but also a beautiful scrimshaw with nice shadings and depth .

Cover the dotted parts of the scrimshaw with , in this case , oil color .

Wipe of and , voila , you have the beginning of the scrimshaw .

Dot , dot , dot and more dots ! Many dots ! Color , wipe of and you are a bit further down the line .

This is how it looks like after 10 hours of hard work . ( You can see the needle and pin wise that she works with , to the right )

Now it's time for the color , start it all over again and begin with darkest color after black and so on until the scrimshaw is finished .
